The governor signed an executive order to bring together leaders from across state government to tackle the opioid epidemic 

Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer yesterday signed an executive order creating a state opioid task force. The task force, which will be chaired by the chief medical executive for the state and the chief deputy director for health for the state Department of Health, is tasked with identifying the root causes of the epidemic and implementing response actions.

The goal is to galvanize state leaders and officials into identifying the root causes of the epidemic, and developing a solution that can be activated to help those suffering.

“As governor, my number one priority is protecting our families and our overall public health,” said Whitmer. “Right now, Michigan is among the states with the highest levels of opioid prescriptions and overdose deaths, with 2,053 overdoses in 2017 alone. This task force will bring us one step closer to finally ending the opioid epidemic in Michigan and keeping families safe.”
