Govs Get It Done: Democratic Governors Call on Trump, McConnell to Pass National Gun Reforms

12 Democratic governors have signed on to a letter calling for the president to work with Congress to pass national gun reforms

Today, 12 Democratic governors sent a letter to President Trump and Senate Majority Leader McConnell calling for action on national gun safety reforms. The letter, led by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was signed by California Gov. Gavin Newson, Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, Delaware Gov. John Carney, Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown, Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo, and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee.
The governors’ call for action lists four policies that the majority of Americans support: passing red flag laws, passing universal background checks, outlawing assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, and establishing stricter reporting requirements to prevent those deemed by a mental health professional to be a danger to themselves or others from purchasing a firearm.
Across the country, Democratic governors are leading on gun safety reforms.  Yet despite the support at the state level, the Trump administration and Republican Congressional leadership’s refusal to act at the national level has left the states with an ineffective patchwork of laws.
