Govs Get It Done: Democratic Governors’ Actions Will Help Ensure a Complete Count in 2020 Census

Latest News

Today’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court temporarily blocks the controversial citizenship question from appearing on the 2020 U.S. Census. But even with this victory, the fight is far from over.
President Trump is already asking if the census can be delayed to give his administration more time to get the question reinstated. And enough distrust has already been created among minority communities that even if the block stands, an accurate count is still at risk. The steps Democratic governors have taken to deliver complete counts in the 2020 census will be more critical than ever before in ensuring an accurate census.
Across the country, Democratic governors have established statewide Complete Count Committees that bring state, local, and tribal governments together with other community groups to encourage census participation. Governors have also allocated funding for additional education and outreach across communities.
Below are some examples of what some of our governors are doing to ensure that all communities are counted in the 2020 census:

  • California: Gov. Gavin Newsom included $54M in additional funding to boost the state’s census effort. The funding is part of a proposed $154.3M investment in census outreach programs that include a Complete Count Committee.
  • Colorado: Gov. Jared Polis signed legislation directing $6M to census outreach grants available to local governments, school districts, charities, and tribes.
  • Illinois: Gov. JB Pritzker signed an executive order to increase census outreach efforts in the state. The efforts will be boosted by $29M in funding that was included in this year’s state budget.
  • Michigan: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer created a Census Complete Count Committee and directed $5M in funding for the Department of Health and Human Services to support and ensure accurate counts.
  • New Mexico: Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation creating a commission to ensure a complete count that will receive $3.5M in funding.
  • New York: Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a state budget allocating $20M in funding for outreach and education efforts around the census to ensure a complete count.
  • Nevada: Gov. Steve Sisolak’s 2020 Census Complete Count Committee created by executive order received $5M in funding.
