Gov. JB Pritzker Announces Massive Tax Relief Package in Annual State of the State and Budget Address

Latest News

In his annual State of the State and budget address yesterday, Gov. JB Pritzker touted his leadership throughout the pandemic, highlighted his record of restorative justice and combating climate change, and announced a near $1 billion tax relief package that will keep hard-earned money in Illinoisans’ pockets.

Here’s what people are saying about Gov. Pritzker’s address:

  • Chicago Tribune: “Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker delivered a reelection year state spending plan Wednesday, touting his efforts to bring stability to the state’s finances and offering voters a near $1 billion package of temporary tax relief while warning that Republicans vowing to take back Illinois would return the state to budgetary chaos.”
  • The Telegraph: “With inflation soaring and drifting snow falling, Pritzker offered an antidote to the pocketbook pinch, suspending or offering rebates for taxes on groceries, gasoline and property.”
  • Chalkbeat Chicago: “Pritzker campaigned on a promise to increase the number of low-income students who receive college scholarships, and his proposal delivers the most substantial boost to that effort of his term.”
  • Advance Illinois President Robin Steans: “This is one of those rare budgets where we have a fiscally responsible budget but it’s one that is proposing needed investments and it’s doing it across the entirety of the educational continuum, which is just wonderful to see and good for kids.”
  • The State Journal-Register: “Pritzker’s proposal also includes $9.6 billion in contributions to the state’s pension systems as well as $1.4 billion in pension buyouts and an additional $500 million contribution, which the governor’s budget office projects will reduce the total liability by $1.8 billion.”
  • Chicago Sun-Times: “The fiscal moves are proposed with an eye toward Wall Street credit ratings agencies who have issued some of their first credit upgrades to the state in decades under Pritzker … Pritzker’s office says they can do all that while offering almost $1 billion in tax relief for families feeling the ‘pinch’ of inflation.”

“Gov. JB Pritzker is building on his long record of achievements with a historic tax relief package that will keep much-needed savings in Illinois families’ pockets,” said DGA Senior Communications Advisor Christina Amestoy. “While the Republican candidates for governor want to return Illinois to budgetary ruin, Gov. Pritzker has brought stability to the state’s finances while also raising the minimum wage, investing in manufacturing, and improving roads and bridges.”
