Garrett Soldano Slammed for Outrageous Comment That Rape Victims Shouldn’t Have Abortions

Latest News

Garrett Soldano went viral yesterday for making a disturbing statement that rape victims who get pregnant shouldn’t get abortions because “God put them in this moment” and “that little baby inside them may be the next president.”

On the right-leaning Face the Facts podcast, Soldano was also asked whether he planned to implement a Texas-style abortion ban. “I will do everything in my power to make sure that happens,” he said.

The video — which has over 600,000 views — has garnered widespread condemnation. State Rep. Mari Manoogian criticized the comments as “truly sickening” and State Sen. Erika Geiss called them “disgusting.”

Despite the backlash, Soldano is digging in his heels today. “I meant every word of it, and I’m not ashamed of it,” he said on Facebook Live this morning.

Soldano isn’t the only one with a horribly extreme plan to ban abortion — as reproductive rights in Michigan will disappear if the Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade. Tudor Dixon supports a ban on abortion with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the mother’s life, James Craig supports criminalizing abortion and punishing health care providers, and Kevin Rinke would enforce Michigan’s draconian 1931 abortion ban.

“Garrett Soldano’s comments yesterday are disgusting and disqualifying, but he’s far from the only candidate in the Republican primary for governor with dangerous plans to ban abortion,” said DGA Deputy Communications Director Sam Newton. “The entire Michigan GOP primary field wants to undermine reproductive rights, and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is the only thing standing in their way. It’s critical that we reelect Gov. Whitmer this year to protect Michigan womens’ right to choose.”
