Florida Democrats Score Historic Mayoral Win in Miami While GOP Gov Candidates Descend Into Civil War

Florida Democrats won the Miami mayoral race last night for the first time in thirty years. Democrat Eileen Higgins swept to victory by 18 points in a district that Kamala Harris won by only one point — a 17-point swing in a state that Donald Trump won by 13 points.

It’s the latest sign of momentum for Democrats in Florida heading into next year’s gubernatorial race — and comes as Republicans are descending into civil war. Byron Donalds, who was supposed to be gliding to the GOP nomination, is now facing a contested primary and a looming challenge from Ron DeSantis’ Lieutenant Governor Jay Collins. An outside group is already spending money for Collins, signaling that this won’t just be a messy primary, it will be an expensive one too.

Democrats’ Miami win — and the Republican fracas — comes amidst an affordability crisis in Florida. After more than 25 years of Republican rule, the costs of housing, health care, car and property insurance, and everything in between are skyrocketing – and making the state virtually unaffordable. And Republicans are being held to account.

“Eileen Higgins’ massive 17-point win last night is the canary in the coal mine for Florida Republicans,” said DGA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe. “Florida Republicans have caused a massive affordability crisis after 25 years in power — and now instead of solving it, their gubernatorial candidates are descending into a nasty, expensive civil war.”
