Five Days Later, Five Questions Kelly Ayotte Must Answer on Her Ties to Rep. Jon Stone

In the five days since a shocking new report from InDepthNH revealed that state Rep. Jon Stone “threatened to kill fellow police officers in a shooting spree, and murder his chief after raping the chief’s wife and children, all while he was already under scrutiny for his inappropriate relationship with a teen girl,” former U.S. Senator and candidate for governor Kelly Ayotte has refused to renounce Stone’s endorsement or condemn his horrific actions.

When asked about this scandal by the Union Leader, “Ayotte’s campaign declined to comment.” Similarly, when asked by Politico, “Ayotte’s campaign didn’t respond to a request for comment.”

Stone was an early endorser of Ayotte’s gubernatorial bid, writing a letter in support in the Valley News in October 2023. As noted by the Granite Post, Ayotte “has thus far refused to remove Stone from lists of endorsers on her website, and has not removed social media posts of herself campaigning at Stone’s gun store.”

“In the five days since this scandal broke, Kelly Ayotte has done nothing but play politics and stay silent. But to Granite Staters, her silence only further proves that she’ll do anything to win, including propping up a man who threatened violence against New Hampshire police officers and families,” said DGA States Press Secretary Emma O’Brien.

Ayotte has dodged questions on her ties to Stone over the last five days. Below are five questions Ayotte must answer on one of her campaign’s earliest endorsers:

  • What did you know about Rep. Jon Stone’s violent past before accepting his endorsement?
  • Why haven’t you renounced Stone’s endorsement of your campaign for governor?
  • Why do you stand with Rep. Stone over New Hampshire police officers and families?
  • How can New Hampshire families trust you will keep them safe when you have failed to condemn violence against police officers and families?
  • Will you apologize to the New Hampshire police officers that Rep. Stone threatened?
