Today, Republican leaders gathered together at the City Club of Chicago in a desperate attempt to unite their fractured party behind Governor Bruce Rauner. Things did not go so well.
Four years ago, Rauner and the Illinois Republican Party held a unity luncheon the morning after his primary victory. Today’s event was the closest Rauner came to having a unity luncheon this year, and there was almost a fight on the stage.
“Bruce Rauner is staggering into a general election with rock bottom poll numbers and a party descending into chaos,” said Illinois DGA communications director Sam Salustro. “Three years of Rauner’s failed leadership has left Republicans unable to get through lunch without expletives or getting into a fight.”
