Every State, Every Vote Responds to the Supreme Court’s Inaction on Ron DeSantis’ Pay-To-Vote Law
Today, the U.S. Supreme Court denied a request to weigh in on a federal appeals court’s decision blocking felons from voting in Florida unless they paid certain fees. Dissenting Justice Sonia Sotomayor called Florida’s law, which could bar as many as 1.4 million people from voting, a “voter paywall.”
Every State, Every Vote Co-Chair Oregon Gov. Kate Brown released the following statement:
“I am extremely disappointed in the Supreme Court’s refusal to weigh in on Gov. Ron DeSantis’ pay-to-vote law. There should not be a price on exercising your fundamental right to vote in a free and fair election. Florida voters already overwhelmingly agreed to grant former felons their fundamental right to vote – without any barriers. Gov. DeSantis’ blatant attempt to dismantle re-enfranchisement efforts is shameful and unconstitutional. The Supreme Court’s indecision will only create more confusion in our election system and block thousands from voting. Voters deserve clear answers now.”
