Eigel Opposes Exceptions for Rape and Incest: “A 1-year-old Could Get An Abortion Under This”

Bill Eigel, state senator and Republican candidate for governor in Missouri, is coming under fire for leading the charge to strike down amendments that would create exceptions for rape and incest under the state’s current extreme abortion ban.

The amendments were introduced in an effort to help protect child rape and incest survivors 12 years old and younger get access to the care they need, and led to a bizarre exchange where Eigel incorrectly claimed “a 1-year-old could get an abortion under this.”

Eigel fits right in to this crowded field of extremists in the Republican primary for governor, including Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft and Lieutenant Governor Mike Kehoe, who all support the state’s near-total abortion ban that has no exceptions for rape and incest. Ashcroft, in his role as secretary of state, has been leading the charge to mislead voters on a ballot amendment that aims to protect reproductive freedom in the fall.

Despite his deeply dangerous positions, Eigel outraised all of his opponents in the last reported fundraising quarter, raising more than $329,000 compared to Ashcroft’s $106,000 and Kehoe’s nearly $260,000, signaling what is sure to be a messy and expensive primary.

“As Missourians across the state come together in support of reversing the state’s cruel and extreme ban on abortion, the Republican candidates for governor are proving they will stop at nothing to further strip Missourians of their freedoms,” said DGA States Press Secretary Emma O’Brien. “Between opposing exceptions for rape and incest – even in the case of children – to supporting charging doctors with murder, these candidates have proven they are far too extreme and out of touch. Missourians value their freedom and deserve a governor who will protect their rights, not one who will strip them away.”
