DGA Statement on Virginia’s GOP Primary for Governor

DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz released the following statement after Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears became the only Republican to qualify for the GOP primary ballot:

“After weeks of messy infighting, Winsome Earle-Sears is limping into the remainder of the primary election weaker and will continue racing to the far-right to earn the support of the large coalition of Virginia Republicans who wanted to abandon her.

Sears must still answer for her agenda of defunding public schools, restricting reproductive freedom, and embracing Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s attacks on Virginia’s workers and economy. Already, Sears has proven herself to be out of touch and out of step with Virginians, and we look forward to showing voters just how much damage she’d cause as governor.”

Sears’ Agenda of Dangerous Extremism is Wrong for Virginia:

  • Defunding Public Schools: Sears has long supported defunding public schools, and weakening Virginia’s public education system. She has aggressively pushed for an expensive voucher scheme that would strip public schools of their resources, to funnel into unaccountable private and charter schools.
  • Restricting Reproductive Freedom: Sears recently cast the tie breaking vote against a bill that would guarantee access to contraception and birth control, and supports an extreme abortion ban “similar to the law that took effect in Texas” that bans abortion before most women know they are pregnant.
  • Embracing Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s Job-Killing Agenda: Sears has been an enthusiastic, vocal supporter of the sweeping cuts that have left thousands of Virginians without their jobs, and weakened the state’s economy. Sears has downplayed the concerns of laid off Virginians, telling them they should “not fret” and she doesn’t understand why their job loss is a “huge, huge thing” as working families suffer.
