DGA Statement on Vernon Jones Joining Nasty GOP Primary In Georgia
Today, with the encouragement of former President Trump, former State Representative Vernon Jones officially announced his campaign against vulnerable incumbent Brian Kemp to be the Republican nominee for governor.
Democratic Governors Association Executive Director Noam Lee released the following statement:
“Today’s announcement from Vernon Jones is the official beginning of the end for Brian Kemp, who was already facing major economic backlash after restricting voting rights and stuck in a public feud with Trump over the 2020 election.
“As a result, Democrats are energized to beat Brian Kemp, Republicans don’t like him either – and if he even makes it out of this brutal and divisive primary there’s no doubt he’ll be in deep trouble with independents too. Jones’ announcement also opens the door for more candidates to join an even bigger and nastier Republican primary, especially with Trump’s promised campaign to defeat Kemp.
“But no matter who wins the GOP nomination, we’re eager to get the job done and elect a Democratic governor in Georgia in order to protect and expand voting rights, ensure access to quality health care, and create more jobs and economic opportunity for all Georgians.”
