DGA Statement on RGA Chair Gov. Kim Reynolds Signing Extreme 6-Week Abortion Ban Into Law in Iowa
Democratic Governors Association Executive Director Meghan Meehan-Draper issued the following statement in response to RGA Chair and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds signing an extreme and dangerous abortion ban before most women know they are pregnant – even after her allies in the legislature rejected a proposal to include exceptions for children 12 years old and younger:
“After forcing lawmakers back to the statehouse for the sole purpose of pushing through an extreme and unpopular abortion ban in the dead of night, RGA Chair and Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has wasted no time signing this dangerous bill into law. This attack on rights defies both the Iowa Supreme Court and the will of the majority of Iowans who know women should have the freedom to make their own private medical decisions.
“Under Reynolds’ leadership, the RGA has become the nation’s foremost champion of these dangerous, far-reaching, and politically toxic efforts to gut women’s reproductive freedom, and they show no sign of stopping. This fight is far from over, and while Republican governors continue to look for cruel new ways to strip millions of Americans of their fundamental rights, Democratic governors will continue fighting back against these attacks in Iowa and across the country.”
Reynolds’ call for a special session came after the Iowa Supreme Court deadlocked in a vote, which “permanently blocked” Reynolds’ bill from 2018 that would have outlawed abortion after six weeks.
