DGA Statement on Pence’s Failed Leadership on LGBT Civil Rights Bills
Today, the Democratic Governors Association issued the following statement after Indiana Republican legislators killed a bill on LGBT civil rights protections. Republicans in the legislature said they did not plan to bring up another LGBT bill until next year, and that Governor Pence’s “apprehension” factored into their decision not to take action.
Pence refused to back any of the LGBT bills this session — even after economic reports showed his discriminatory RFRA law cost the state up to $60 million.
“Mike Pence created a multi-million dollar economic problem and quietly backed out of the room when it was time to clean up his mess,” said DGA Communications Director Jared Leopold. “Hoosiers are looking for a governor to lead and solve problems. Yet again, Mike Pence has failed that test.
“Mike Pence’s RFRA disaster serves as a national example that discrimination is bad for business. It’s a shame that Governor Pence’s only answer is to keep passing the buck.”
