DGA Statement on PayPal’s North Carolina Announcement

Today, the Democratic Governors Association released the following statement after PayPal announced the cancelation of plans to build a global operations center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

PayPal cited North Carolina’s new anti-LGBT law, signed by Gov. Pat McCrory, as the reason for pulling the $3.6 million project that would have brought 400 high-paying jobs to the Charlotte area.

PayPal’s announcement comes as the latest blow McCrory’s discrimination law has dealt to North Carolina’s economy. The law has already caused Lionsgate to cancel production of a TV show in Charlotte, harmed the state’s $5 billion High Point Furniture Market, and has caused Braeburn Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to reevaluate a $20 million economic development project in Durham County.

“Today the economic consequences of Governor McCrory’s discrimination bill are clear: Pat McCrory has killed hundreds of North Carolina jobs with his reckless social agenda,” said DGA Communications Director Jared Leopold. “Just like Indiana Governor Mike Pence before him, Governor McCrory has damaged his state’s economy with a dangerous discrimination law. The message for America’s governors is clear: Discrimination is wrong and it’s bad for business.”
