DGA Statement on Montana’s Messy GOP Gubernatorial Primary

Democratic Governors Association Deputy Communications Director Izzi Levy issued the following statement after Republican State Representative Tanner Smith joined Montana’s GOP gubernatorial primary:

“With Rep. Tanner Smith’s announcement yesterday, Montana is the latest state where Republicans are bracing for a messy gubernatorial primary — part of a growing pattern after being forced to spend millions in recent years protecting unpopular incumbents from challengers within their own party. After spending years focused on divisive partisan battles, pushing to ban abortion, ignoring sky high housing costs, blocking funding for public lands, and attacking school teachers rather than delivering actual results for Montanans, it’s no surprise that Gov. Greg Gianforte is now facing pressure from all sides as he struggles to answer for his failed record.”
