DGA Statement on Michael Steele Creating Exploratory Committee for a Potential Run for Governor of Maryland
Yesterday, Michael Steele announced he is creating an exploratory committee for a potential run for governor in Maryland in 2022. Democratic Governors Association Deputy Executive Director Wendi Wallace released the following statement:
“Michael Steele’s potential entrance into the GOP primary would only add to the growing infighting that will inevitably leave the Republican party in shambles. Donald Trump has proved he still has an iron-grip over the Maryland Republican base and whether or not Steele hops in, the GOP candidates are in for a brutal battle to prove their loyalty to far-right and unpopular policies.
“Even if Michael Steele does make it through a messy and divisive primary fight, Marylanders will be deeply troubled by his record as a former national GOP chair who led the effort to repeal health care, peddled the Tea Party agenda, and holds radical anti-abortion views.
“Maryland families want a governor who will fight for them – not an out-of-touch national Republican like Steele.”
