DGA Statement on Joe Biden’s Vice Presidential Nominee
Today, Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden announced he has selected U.S. Senator Kamala Harris of California as his running mate for the 2020 election.
Democratic Governors Association Chair New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy issued the following statement:
“Joe Biden’s selection of Kamala Harris is a watershed moment in American politics that reflects how far our society has come. She is the exact right person to step into this crucial leadership role at one of the most challenging times in our nation’s history.
“The daughter of immigrants and someone who has dedicated her life to public service, Kamala Harris’ story is the American Dream come to life. Her passion, toughness and dedication to helping improve peoples’ lives will make her an incredible asset to our Democratic ticket. Just like Vice President Biden, Senator Harris is ready to lead from day one and move us forward. I look forward to doing everything in my power to elect her and Joe Biden this November.
“Vice President Biden had no shortage of qualified women to choose from in our party, including many Democratic governors. His consideration of Gov. Whitmer, Gov. Lujan Grisham, and Gov. Raimondo speaks to their incredible leadership.
“I know he and his campaign will continue to look to Democratic governors to pave the way to 270. Since 2016, Democratic governors have won big victories in both red and blue states, including eight states that went for Trump in the 2016 election. Democratic governors currently represent 288 electoral votes, including the swing states of Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, Minnesota, Nevada, Wisconsin, and Colorado. Democratic governors have been and will continue to be the strongest line of defense against a harmful Trump agenda. We look forward to helping Democratic candidates win up and down the ballot in November.”
