DGA Statement on Jessica Gomez Joining the OR GOP’s Crowded Gubernatorial Primary

Latest News

Yesterday, failed Republican state Senate candidate Jessica Gomez announced her candidacy in Oregon’s 2022 race for governor. Gomez is the latest to join the crowded GOP primary field.

Just like in races across the country, there’s no doubt the GOP primary will be filled with extreme pro-Trump litmus tests, including ongoing false claims about the 2020 election that led to the deadly insurrection. In recent years, the Oregon GOP has become a breeding ground for far-right Trumpism. The state party recently called the January 6 insurrection a “false flag” operation, unseated a pro-Trump official for not being extreme enough and even partnered with extremist militias.

DGA Executive Director Noam Lee released the following statement on Gomez’s campaign announcement:

“Jessica Gomez has entered a GOP primary that will be undoubtedly be dominated by pro-Trump extremism. In the race to the far-right, the Oregon GOP is likely to implode with infighting, and whoever comes out on top will be permanently tied to Trump and his toxic agenda. Each time another candidate enters the already crowded race, they add fuel to the far-right fire, and Oregon voters are turning away from the increasingly extreme Republican Party. We look forward to building on the progress in Oregon by ensuring the election of a Democratic governor in 2022.”
