DGA Statement on Greg Zanetti’s Entrance to New Mexico’s Republican Gubernatorial Primary

Latest News

Yesterday, Greg Zanetti announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for governor of New Mexico.

Democratic Governors Association Executive Director Noam Lee released the following statement:

“Greg Zanetti is a failed fringe candidate who’s running on fearmongering and lies. Zanetti has come up short in his bid for statewide office before – losing the Republican primary for lieutenant governor in 1994 and bailing on his 2009 gubernatorial campaign to take a job in Washington state. With a track record of losing and bailing on New Mexicans, Zanetti’s in trouble as he enters a crowded GOP primary once again.

“Zanetti’s racist, extreme positions put him at odds with New Mexican values. He discredits science and spreads COVID lies. He has a longstanding anti-choice record including organizing advocacy against abortion access. And he uses racist dog whistles to create fear around immigration and crime.

“Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has shown what leadership looks like through the pandemic, making New Mexico a national model for testing and vaccines. In just two years, Gov. Lujan Grisham invested hundreds of millions in small businesses, cut taxes for half a million middle-class families, and distributed $4 billion of pandemic relief money directly to New Mexicans. New Mexicans have a choice between progress and fringe, unpopular policies, and we look forward to re-electing Gov. Lujan Grisham in 2022.”
