DGA Statement on Gov. Jay Inslee’s Announcement
DGA Executive Director Meghan Meehan-Draper released the following statement on Gov. Jay Inslee announcing that he will not seek re-election as Governor of Washington:
“Governor Inslee has been an outstanding leader for the people of Washington and the entire nation over the course of his historic three terms. Under his leadership, Washington has become a beacon of hope for climate action and the clean energy economy through the passage of historic legislation such as the Climate Commitment Act, the Clean Energy Transformation Act, and environmental justice laws like the HEAL Act. Gov. Inslee also took crucial action to create more opportunities for working families by expanding paid sick leave and enacting the nation’s highest minimum wage, all while protecting fundamental freedoms like access to abortion and the right to vote.
“As a constant, critical partner for the DGA, Gov. Inslee has been a strong and accomplished advocate in our work to elect more Democratic governors. Under his leadership as DGA Chair in 2018, the DGA saw a net gain of seven Democratic governorships that led to remarkable progress in states across the country. Gov. Inslee also helped raise record funds and was an important voice highlighting the role governors can play in protecting our environment through his multi-year leadership of the DGA’s Green Governors Council.
“The DGA is extremely grateful for Gov. Inslee’s strong leadership and public service, and we look forward to continuing to work with him as he finishes out his term. The DGA also remains ready to ensure that a Democratic successor is elected in Washington in 2024.”
