DGA Statement on Expiring COVID-19 Unemployment Benefits
This weekend, the extra $600 unemployment benefit provided to Americans through the CARES Act is set to expire, spelling disaster for the unemployed individuals across the country who have come to rely on the extra support.
DGA Chair New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy released the following statement calling on Congress to take immediate action to extend this critical benefit:
“The chaos and disarray within the Republican party has resulted in the failure to reup COVID-19 unemployment benefits, and Americans are going to suffer the consequences. Republicans are allowing Americans to lose critical economic support, just as the economy is cratering again. I urge Congress to take immediate action to reinstate the extra benefits for struggling, unemployed Americans. We can’t cut our way out of this crisis. Without additional support for unemployed Americans and for states, our economy will continue to collapse.”
