DGA Statement on California Recall Campaign

Latest News

Today, Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom announced he has formed a recall committee to fight back against the Republican Party’s latest scheme to disrupt COVID-19 recovery efforts and rile up the Trump base.

Democratic Governors Association Executive Director Noam Lee released the following statement on the California recall:

“Rather than allowing Californians to focus on fighting and recovering from the pandemic, Republicans want to spend millions of taxpayer dollars to recall Gov. Gavin Newsom in the middle of a national crisis – a costly distraction at an important time – all in a craven attempt to put California’s government in the hands of Trump Republicans.

“Gov. Newsom has provided steady, science-based leadership during the pandemic and continues to do so, even amidst partisan attacks. The latest polling clearly shows Gov. Newsom has the support of the majority of Californians for his leadership on the pandemic.

“The Republican recall has been tied to groups who planned and led the insurrection on January 6th, anti-vaccination activists, QAnon conspiracy theorists, and the Proud Boys, among others.

“This is the 6th recall attempt since Gov. Newsom won in 2018. If they spent less time in pursuit of a partisan power-grab, and more time fighting vaccine hesitancy, supporting the COVID relief package, and working with all stakeholders to help the state recover, Californians would be better off.

“Any attempt to recall Gov. Newsom will end up being an expensive and failed waste of Republican time, energy and resources.”
