DGA Statement on 5th Circuit Decision Attacking Reproductive Freedom

Democratic Governors Association Chair Gov. Phil Murphy released the following statement in response to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals decision restricting access to medication abortion:

“Yesterday’s ruling is just the latest reminder that Democratic governors remain the last and best line of defense for reproductive freedom. While MAGA Republicans and the right-wing judges they put in place keep working to undermine reproductive rights — even ripping away access to a medication that has been safely prescribed for over 20 years — Democratic governors across the country remain committed to protecting and strengthening women’s most fundamental rights and to making sure every American can get the health care they need.”

Since the Dobbs decision last year, Democratic governors have led the fight to proactively protect abortion access, while MAGA Republicans’ attacks on reproductive freedom have put Democrats on offense. Earlier this year, as Republicans took to the courts to strip away access to medication abortion, Democratic governors including Gavin Newsom, Maura Healey, Kathy Hochul, Tina Kotek, and Jay Inslee took swift action to create stockpiles of these pills to ensure their citizens can access the care they need.
