DGA Raises Groundbreaking $15 Million In First Half of 2013
WASHINGTON, DC—Vermont Governor and Democratic Governors Association Chair Peter Shumlin today announced that the DGA raised $15 million in the first six months of 2013, a record haul for the organization in an off-year and a 30 percent increase from the same period in 2009.
“In 2009 and 2010, Republican candidates for governor promised to focus on job creation, but have since been distracted by radical assaults on women’s health, disenfranchising voters, attacking workers, and implementing economic schemes that reward the wealthiest and well-connected at the expense of middle class families,” Governor Shumlin said. “A few short years later, polls reflect that voters in states with Republican governors have buyer’s remorse and today’s filing demonstrates that Democrats across the country are more energized than ever.”
In the first six months of 2009, the DGA raised $11.6 million – $3.5 million less than what the organization has raised so far in 2013 across all entities. Under the leadership of Maryland Governor and former Chair Martin O’Malley, the organization steadily increased its fundraising, resulting in Democratic victories across red and blue states alike. There are two gubernatorial elections in 2013 and 36 more in 2014, many in states that President Obama won twice but that elected Republican governors in the Republican wave of 2009 and 2010.
“With these resources, the DGA is well-positioned to help take back statehouses that belong firmly in Democratic hands,” Shumlin added. “As we recruit strong candidates and build the infrastructure needed to win across the country, we will continue to communicate that in order to put an end to Tea Party-style governance in America, it’s critical we elect more Democratic governors.”
Founded in 1983, the DGA is an independent political organization organized to support Democratic governors and candidates across the nation. As the only organization dedicated to electing Democratic governors and candidates, the DGA participates at all levels of campaigns, from providing resources to funding operations to helping candidates articulate and deliver their messages.
