DGA, DSCC, DCCC, Maine Voters File Intervention Motion to Protect Against Voter Suppression Efforts in Maine

Today, the Democratic Governors Association (DGA), the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC), the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), and two Maine voters filed a motion to protect against misleading ballot language about a new voter initiative that would make it more difficult for Mainers to exercise their fundamental right to vote.

Last week, supporters of the voter suppression initiative filed a lawsuit to force the Maine Secretary of State to rewrite the current ballot question language and replace it with deliberately misleading language. DGA, DSCC, DCCC, and Maine voters are fighting to ensure that Mainers have an accurate and complete description of the ballot initiative.

DGA Executive Director Meghan Meehan-Draper, DSCC Executive Director Devan Barber, and DCCC Executive Director Julie Merz released the following statement on the motion: “Mainers have a right to have their voices heard at the ballot box, and this shameful attempt to confuse and mislead voters in an effort to force through restrictions that will make it harder to vote is an assault on their freedoms. At every turn, Democrats will intervene on the side of voters and fight back against attacks on their fundamental right to vote.”

The measure’s proposed language would obscure the true impact of the ballot initiative, which will make it harder for Mainers to vote by:

  • Restricting or outright eliminating voter-friendly policies that thousands of Mainers rely upon to reliably cast their ballots,

  • Restricting Maine’s cities and towns to using a single ballot drop box,

  • Eliminating the right to register for “ongoing absentee voter status,”

  • Banning prepaid postage on absentee return envelopes, and

  • Restricting the methods and time period for requesting an absentee ballot.
