DGA Chair Gov. Laura Kelly Statement on the Three Year Anniversary of the Dobbs Decision
DGA Chair Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly released the following statement on the three year anniversary of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization:
“The Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization Supreme Court decision, issued on June 24, 2022, overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision, which had established a constitutional right to abortion. This decision effectively eliminates the federal right to abortion and allows individual states to regulate or ban abortion. Since the Dobbs decision, Democratic governors have been taking direct action and signing laws to protect and expand reproductive freedoms.
“With Donald Trump and extreme Republicans in control of the federal government, the fight to protect reproductive rights has never been more important. Abortion access is on the ballot in Virginia and New Jersey this November, and there are 36 consequential governors’ races next year where extreme Republican candidates have already threatened to restrict access to abortion if elected.
“Millions of Americans — a majority of the U.S. population — look to Democratic governors as the last line of defense for our freedoms. Electing more Democratic governors is the best path forward to take on the biggest issues facing our country and states, including protecting reproductive freedom, in the face of unpopular and dangerous Republican-led attacks to strip away fundamental rights.”
