DGA Calls on Michigan GOP Chair Ron Weiser to Leave Eric Greitens Legal Defense Fund

Top Republican Officials in Lansing — Including Gov. Snyder, Lt. Gov. Calley, and AG Schuette – Must also Urge Weiser to Leave Unethical Defense Fund

The Democratic Governors Association is calling on Michigan Republican Party Chair Ron Weiser to leave the “ERG Defense Fund” following a report from the Detroit News that details how Weiser is a founder of a legal defense fund that was created to help protect Missouri Governor Eric Greitens, who was indicted by a grand jury for felony invasion of privacy.

The DGA is also calling on top Republican officials in Lansing – including Governor Rick Snyder, Lt. Governor Brian Calley, and Attorney General Bill Schuette —
to use their standing in the state’s Republican establishment to urge Weiser to leave the unethical defense fund.
As the Detroit News reports: “Ron Weiser is using his name to help raise defense money for embattled Missouri GOP Gov. Eric Greitens, who is fighting allegations he attempted to blackmail a woman with whom he had an affair by threatening to release a partially nude photo of her.”
Meanwhile in Missouri, numerous Republican officeholders have called on Eric Greitens to resign. Greitens visited Michigan last year when he spoke at the Mackinac Republican Leadership Conference, which also featured Snyder, Calley, and Schuette.
“It’s shameful that the leadership of the Michigan Republican Party is raising cash to protect an unethical and shady politician from out-of-state who is facing a felony grand jury indictment,” said DGA Deputy Communications Director David Turner. “And until members of the Michigan Republican establishment like Governor Snyder, Lt. Governor Calley, and Attorney General Schuette also urge Weiser to leave the defense fund – it will become increasingly clear that the Michigan Republican Party would rather fight for a disgraced politician indicted for a felony instead of Michigan families who are worried about their declining schools, roads, and wages.”
