DGA Calls on Martinez, GOP Candidates to Come Clean on Trump
RNC Chair calls Trump ‘presumptive GOP nominee,’ RGA Chair still silent
Today, the Democratic Governors Association called on Governor Susana Martinez, the Republican Governors Association Chair, to announce whether she will support presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump for president.
For more than 2 months, Martinez has refused to answer reporters’ questions about whether she will support Trump if he wins the nomination.
After Ted Cruz dropped out, Republican National Committee Chair Reince Priebus congratulated Trump as the “presumptive GOP nominee” and called on the party to unite behind his campaign. Martinez has not yet commented.
“Today, Republican governors’ worst nightmares came true: Donald Trump is going to be the Republican nominee,” said DGA Communications Director Jared Leopold. “Republicans up in 2016 will have to share a ballot with Donald Trump this fall. It’s time for the RGA Chair to break her 60-day silence and admit whether she’ll support Donald Trump for president.”
Martinez’s RGA Finance Chair, Fred Malek, told USA Today in March that a Trump nomination “could imperil his party’s chances of picking up Democratic governors’ seats in Missouri, Montana, West Virginia, Vermont and New Hampshire.”
