DGA Announces Gov. Maura Healey as New Chair of the Women Governors Fund

The Democratic Governors Association announced that Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey will be the chair of the DGA’s Women Governors Fund – the first and only fundraising initiative solely dedicated to electing Democratic women governors.

“From creating more economic opportunity for families to protecting fundamental freedoms, our historic class of Democratic women governors is leading the way to deliver on the biggest issues facing American families. At the same time, it’s no secret that we face unique challenges and barriers to being elected,” said Massachusetts Governor and Chair of the Women Governors Fund Maura Healey. “With attacks on reproductive rights at an all-time high and too many families continuing to struggle with the high cost of living, we must keep working to support and promote more Democratic women to join our ranks in these vital executive roles across the country. I am honored to take on this role and I look forward to working with the DGA to continue building our bench of Democratic women governors.”

The DGA’s Women Governors Fund is a dedicated, no-overhead fund that supports our women Governors and nominees. In her new role, Gov. Healey will work to grow the DGA’s record-breaking fundraising, help eliminate the barriers that women face when running for executive leadership, and advise women nominees on what it takes to win.

“A proven winner and trailblazer, Gov. Healey understands the unique challenges women candidates and executives face, while also building a strong record of delivering for Massachusetts families by cutting costs, investing in housing and transportation, and protecting reproductive rights,” said DGA Executive Director Meghan Meehan-Draper. “Gov. Healey is the perfect leader to take on this new role, and the DGA is thrilled that she will be bringing her experience and knowledge to this critical initiative.”

While women running for office have seen historic levels of investment at the federal level, the DGA has been working hard to close the gap in investment at the state level and successfully elect women executives in critical governor’s races. The Women Governors Funds is a critical piece of this overall effort.

  • Since 2018, the DGA has invested over $80 million in states and campaigns to elect and re-elect the country’s current and historic class of eight Democratic women governors.
  • Two out of the three governor’s offices that flipped from red to blue in 2022 were in states that now have a Democratic woman governor (Massachusetts and Arizona).
  • In 2022, a record eight Democratic women governors were elected, including the successful reelections of Kansas Gov. Laura Kelly, Maine Gov. Janet Mills, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, as well as the successful elections of new Democratic women governors, including Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey, and Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek.
