Democratic Governors Set to Represent the Majority of States for the First Time Since 2010
It is now clear that Democratic governors are set to represent the majority of states for the first time since 2010. At one point in the first Trump administration in 2017, there were only 15 Democratic governors. DGA Chair Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and DGA Vice Chair Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer released the following statement:
“This incredible milestone marks a new era of Democratic leadership in states across the country. Democratic governors and the DGA pulled off this amazing turnaround by competing and winning everywhere, staying focused on the biggest issues impacting Americans every day, and always standing up for our values.
“More Democratic governors mean better lives for the millions of Americans who live in our states. It means there will be more good-paying jobs, better schools for our kids, safer roads and bridges to drive on, and it will be easier to see a doctor. Democratic governors are also a firewall in the states against Donald Trump’s lawlessness and reckless policies, while standing up for our democracy and fundamental freedoms.
“Our Democratic governors, candidates, and the DGA have put years of hard work behind winning tough races cycle-after-cycle, and our wins tonight are a testament to that. As Chair and Vice Chair of the DGA, we are immensely proud to have played a part in achieving this breakthrough, and we look forward to working with our fellow Democratic governors to keep getting results.”
