Democratic Governors Call Out Corrupt Trump Administration For Fueling Affordability Crisis

As Donald Trump and Republicans held their midterm convention, DGA Chair Governor Beshear, along with Governors Laura Kelly, Tim Walz, Bob Ferguson, and Matt Meyer highlighted how Trump’s chaotic tariffs, reckless war, and disastrous budget law have been hurting their states driving up costs on everything.Governor Beshear also outlined how the DGA is going on offense to flip states from red to blue across the country.

ABC: Democratic governor of Kentucky reacts to midterm convention, slams Trump’s ‘dividend’ promise as ‘briber in chief’ 

• Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, flanked by a few other Democratic governors in Louisville, Kentucky, told reporters on Thursday that President Donald Trump’s promise of $5,000 checks to Americans if Republicans hold Congress is because the president is the “briber in chief.”
• “Last night, the president made himself the ‘briber in chief,'” Beshear said after Trump’s promise on Wednesday night to give “every adult citizen” a $5,000 “dividend” check on the condition that Republicans maintain control of Congress.
• “If Donald Trump wants to hold the convention saying this election is about him, I fully support his decision to hold the convention saying this election is totally about him. He’s telling people to pretend that he’s on the ballot, I want people to pretend that he’s on the ballot,” Beshear said. “If you are for tariffs, vote for Donald Trump, the Republican candidate. If you are for gas being higher, vote for Donald Trump, the Republican candidate. Otherwise, vote for the Democrat.”

• “With just a little more than 50 days until the midterm elections, we have a huge opportunity to do something about it,” Beshear said. “Our Democratic candidates are working to be the voices of reason and making life more affordable and focused on the issues that truly matter — not just to Democrats, but to every single American.”

• “If you’re a hardworking American, you haven’t made any more money. What you’ve done is paid more costs,” Beshear said “You’re not going to get $5,000 to help you out from Donald Trump, but you are losing at least $3,000 every year with him being in office.”

• “Well, last night, the President made himself the briber in chief,” Beshear said. “It is not legal to offer people money for their vote, but if we know one thing about Donald Trump, it’s he’s never paid a bill he’s owed.”

• Democratic governors gathered in Louisville on Thursday to criticize policies of the Trump administration and Congress, saying tariffs, fuel prices and other issues are making life more expensive.

• “We make sure that we’re good neighbors and good trading partners with our friends, and all of those things are being thrown into chaos because of a single person in the White House and a whole bunch of people sitting in governor’s offices across this country and in the Senate and the House that aren’t doing anything about that,” Walz said.

• As the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) meets in Louisville for its Fall policy conference, Beshear — the 2026 DGA chair — says Democrats are looking to win as many of the 36 gubernatorial races on the ballot in November.

• The governors of Kansas, Minnesota, Washington and Delaware joined Beshear, attacking the Trump administration’s “chaotic policies” – from tariffs to Medicaid cuts – and the impacts on their states.

• “Every business I talk to says, ‘Look, we have no certainty on what we can expect, on how we do a budget,’” [Governor Ferguson] explained. “You can’t work that way as a business when you’ve got such chaotic policies coming out of Washington, D.C.”

Kentucky Lantern: Dem governors predict a ‘blue wave’ in November with Trump’s stances on tariffs, war

• At the Democratic Governors Association’s fall policy conference in Louisville, a few governors said Thursday their party’s candidates will win voters on affordability and took aim at Trump’s policies on foreign tariffs and the war in Iran, boosting prices on groceries and gas at home.

• Walz said the deteriorating relationship between the U.S. and Canada not only affects economies in his state, which is on the border, but is “deeply cultural and so personal and so damaging.” “Our hockey teams play each other. We grocery shop in the stores across the border. I have to leave Minnesota to get to part of Minnesota because I have to go through Manitoba to get to the Northwest Angle. … These are our closest allies,” Walz said.

• Kelly said Trump’s plan to import beef to lower prices has brought “unfair competition” to Kansas farmers. “They need predictability. They need access to markets. They need to know that when they plant their crops or raise their cattle, that there will be a market for what they produce,” she said. “Instead, they’re being asked to absorb consequences of a trade war they didn’t start.”

• The governors also predict a “blue wave” this fall, citing a rise in Democrats voting in their states. Ferguson said Washington Democrats have made gains in districts they lost a couple of years ago. Beshear also said Kentucky Democrats are poised to flip the 6th Congressional District this fall, which “shows you the motivation that’s out there.”

Louisville Courier-Journal: Beshear accuses Trump of bribing voters with $5,000 ‘dividend’ promise

• During a press conference at the Democratic Governors Association’s annual conference in Louisville, Beshear said it’s “not legal to offer people money for their vote. But if we know one thing about Donald Trump, it’s he’s never paid a bill he’s owed, whether it’s in the private sector or as president. Where are those $2,000 rebates he promised all Americans? They absolutely never materialized.”
• During the press conference, governors from across the country criticized the president’s policies on tariffs, Medicaid and deteriorating relations with Canada. They were also quick to hit back on the president’s efforts to bolster Republican voting ahead of the midterms.
• For both Walz and Ferguson, whose states share borders with Canada, the impacts of economic tariffs have been devastating. But more than that, the loss of the relationship is isolating the U.S. from its closest trading partner and ally, Walz said.
