Democratic Committees Hold First-Ever Joint Redistricting Summit

Top Leaders of DGA, DCCC, DLCC Bring Unified Focus to 2020 Redistricting Strategy

Today, the heads of three Democratic campaign committees came together for a first-ever joint redistricting summit – five years in advance of the 2020 redistricting process. The meeting brought together the Chairs and Director of the Democratic Governors Association (DGA), the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), and the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee (DLCC) to develop a comprehensive strategy for elections that will affect the redistricting process.

The Democratic National Committee’s (DNC) CEO Amy Dacey and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee’s (DSCC) Deputy Executive Director Preston Elliott also participated in the meeting.

At the meeting, DCCC Chair Rep. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), DGA Chair Gov. Dan Malloy (D-CT), and DLCC Advantage 2020 Director Mark Schauer discussed opportunities to work together on redistricting strategy, including working together on field efforts, targeting data, and candidate recruitment.

The DGA, DCCC, and DLCC each have unique and complementary redistricting projects. The meeting, hosted today at the DGA’s headquarters in Washington, was designed to be the first in an ongoing conversation between the three electoral committees.

“We need to unrig the map in 2020 and in order to do that we need to work together as Democrats,” said DGA Chair Gov. Dan Malloy. “Today’s meeting marks a key step in building a unified and long-term strategy to beat back the Republican gerrymandering we saw in 2010. The decisions we make now will help ensure that Democrats are well positioned to restore fair electoral maps in 2020.”

“Democrats must work together in order to win together, and this first-of-its-kind meeting was a needed jumpstart towards developing a proactive redistricting effort and infrastructure that will be critical to the Democratic Party’s future,” said DCCC Chairman Rep. Ben Ray Luján. “Each organization represented has distinct redistricting responsibilities, but this conversation surfaced smart areas for cooperation and long-term strategy in the field, with data and analytics, and recruitment. This ongoing effort is critical to ensure Democrats are best positioned for 2020 redistricting.”

“A unified party effort is key to positioning Democratic state legislators to prevent another GOP gerrymander in the next round of redistricting,” said Advantage 2020 Director Mark Schauer. “Down-ballot electoral support will be essential to establishing fair maps for the next decade, and determining where our long-term strategies overlap and identifying common tactical opportunities will ensure Democratic redistricting success post-2020.”

This summer the DGA launched “Unrig the Map,” an effort that targets 18 races in states where governors play key roles in the approval process of redrawn voting districts. The DLCC’s Advantage 2020 project is targeting key legislative districts to flip Republican-held statehouses to Democratic control across the 40 states in which lawmakers draw district maps. The DCCC’s The Majority Project is a multi-pronged strategy, with a significant redistricting component, aimed at restoring and sustaining a Democratic majority in the House of Representatives.
