Dem Govs Promote Child Tax Credit in Their States, Take Action to Get Families Signed Up

As payments from the American Rescue Plan’s Child Tax Credit begin to hit families’ bank accounts and mailboxes starting today, Democratic governors across the country are helping promote the new program in their states.

Democratic governors were on the front lines of fighting for the Child Tax Credit, which is providing additional relief payments of up to $3,600 per child to almost 90% of American families, helping an estimated 3.8 million children. While Democratic governors work to make sure families in their states are enrolled in the new program, Republican governors opposed the American Rescue Plan, ignoring the massive impact its initiatives, like the Child Tax Credit, have on working families.

“By incessantly bashing the American Rescue Plan and the benefits in it, Republican governors proved to voters in their states that they do not care about finding solutions to the problems that affect their everyday lives,” said DGA Political Director Marshall Cohen. “The facts are clear: The American Rescue Plan is making a real positive impact for Americans. By opposing it, Republican governors are standing in the way of vital economic relief that will undoubtedly be a major issue for voters in 2022.”

Here’s what Democratic governors are saying about the Child Tax Credit:

  • Gov. Gretchen Whitmer: “The federal Child Tax Credit is a powerful tool to help us fight childhood poverty. This is a game-changing investment that will uplift kids and families in Michigan and across the United States and is another example of how we are making a real difference in people’s lives right now.”

  • Gov. Phil Murphy: “Start​ing today, direct monthly payments will begin to hit families’ bank accounts and mailboxes – helping cut child poverty and provide historic relief for our working families. This is a big deal, and it’s all thanks to POTUS’s American Rescue Plan.”

  • Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham: “Today families across America will start receiving monthly Biden Child Tax Credit payments. That means over 70,000 New Mexico children and families will no longer have to worry about putting food on the table or keeping a roof over their heads.”

  • Gov. David Ige: “Relief is on its way for nearly ALL working families thanks to the Child Tax Credit POTUS put in the American Rescue Plan. 90% of American families will receive up to $3,600 per child, paid in monthly installments over the next year beginning July 15.”

  • Gov. Ned Lamont: “In case you missed it, today families will begin receiving $250 – $300 per child monthly for six months from the Child Tax Credit. You can use the direct deposit or mailed check on childcare, healthcare, food, clothes, or anything else to provide for your kids.”

  • Gov. Roy Cooper: “This is how we build back stronger. Thanks to the Biden-Harris Administration and the American Rescue Plan, North Carolinians are getting critical assistance that will help them feed their families and keep the lights on.”
