David Crowley Kicks Off General Election With Momentum as Extreme MAGA Congressman Tiffany Falls Flat

While extreme MAGA Congressman Tom Tiffany spent the first week of the general election dodging questions about whether he will campaign with Trump, and getting called out for being a “lockstep supporter of the unpopular president’s lurch toward authoritarianism,” David Crowley spent the week building the momentum to win Wisconsin’s governor’s race.

Since becoming the nominee, Crowley has been traveling across the state to fire up Wisconsinites and share his plans to make Wisconsin more affordable – drawing a clear contrast between himself and MAGA Congressman Tom Tiffany, who has driven up costs by blindly backing Trump’s disastrous economic policies. While Congressman Tiffany is putting loyalty to Trump ahead of doing what’s right for Wisconsin, Crowley is running to be a governor for all Wisconsinites, and is committed to earning the support of GOP voters who feel “rejected by this current Republican party.”

Green Bay Press-Gazette:

• David Crowley and Sarah Godlewski, Democratic nominees to be Wisconsin governor and lieutenant governor, respectively, looked to tie Republican gubernatorial nominee Tom Tiffany to President Donald Trump, criticizing the congressman’s voting record as conforming to Trump.

• And in an interview with the Press-Gazette, Crowley framed Tiffany as contributing to the country’s rising costs that many Americans see as one of the nation’s biggest problems. Crowley attributed Tiffany’s previous comments about Milwaukee County’s deficit under Crowley’s leadership as “pointing to a record because he doesn’t have one.”

• As county executive, Crowley manages one of the largest county budgets in the state that’s facing a multimillion-dollar deficit forecast to triple in the next five years without intervention. Crowley has also helped to negotiate a bipartisan shared-revenue deal to avert a fiscal crisis in Milwaukee.

• [Crowley] would focus on affordability, give more funding to public schools, expand BadgerCare, and would repeal Act 10, the recently restored law that largely strips public employees of bargaining rights.

• Crowley told us after his last event of the day, “It was amazing. There’s nothing like having your neighbors, your mentors, your teachers those who’ve seen you grow up in this community come out to support you.”

• Crowley said, “It’s about building something bigger than any one campaign. It’s about building a movement, y’all.”
• Crowley told us, “Right now, we’re going to continue to do what we’ve done. Because it’s clearly a winning strategy at this moment.”

• Democratic gubernatorial nominee David Crowley stopped at the Winnebago County Democratic office Thursday, touting what his campaign says is more than $1.5 million raised in the first 24 hours of his general election campaign.

• Crowley said the support — from thousands of people across the state — reflects the stakes of the race. He pitched his record of balancing budgets, cutting property taxes and expanding affordable housing.

• Crowley, who serves as Milwaukee County Executive, said local input is central to his governing approach.

• “We have not allowed people to lend their voices, their lived experiences, to the solutions that are going to work for them and in their community,” Crowley said. “What I’ve learned, being Milwaukee County Executive, representing 19 different municipalities, is that there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. We have to tailor all of our solutions to fit each community needs.”

Wisconsin Examiner: 

• “The job is not done. The job is not finished,” Crowley said. “My job is not to become the first, and if I do become the first, my job is to make sure that I’m not the last and provide more opportunities for young men and women all across this state.”

• “Tiffany stood with those who tried to overturn a free and fair presidential election instead of defending our democracy,” Crowley said. “He’s worked in lockstep with Donald Trump to slash programs that Wisconsin families depend on, including SNAP and healthcare for our children, our seniors and veterans and working families. He backed harmful, costly policies like the war in Iran, while too many families right here, right at home, are struggling to make ends meet. He spends his time fueling culture wars because sowing division is much easier than delivering results.”
