Andy Biggs and Karrin Taylor Robson Celebrate Medicaid Expansion Anniversary by Embracing Toxic Plan to Gut Medicaid
On this day 12 years ago, former Republican Gov. Jan Brewer worked across the aisle to sign Medicaid expansion into law, which now provides healthcare coverage to more than 600,000 Arizonans. How are Andy Biggs and Karrin Taylor Robson celebrating? By cheerleading a toxic plan that would rip away healthcare from Arizona families.
Instead of honoring that legacy of bipartisan leadership, Andy Biggs said, “I agree with the more cut approach.” Meanwhile, Karrin Taylor Robson said that Congress needs to hurry up and pass legislation that drastically cuts Medicaid “ASAP.”
Roughly one in four Arizonans are enrolled in the program, meaning the GOP plan to cut Medicaid could jeopardize the healthcare of 600,000 Arizonans, cause rural hospitals to shutter, and eliminate 300,000 jobs.
One Arizonan said that she is “terrified” of what these cuts would mean for her family, and Arizona healthcare leaders have been abundantly clear that they are “not sure how many rural hospitals would survive.”
Even Republican Gov. Jan Brewer argued that by cutting Medicaid, people will die, and said bluntly that “you can’t kill people to balance your budget.”
DGA Communications Director Sam Newton said: “Today’s anniversary should be a reminder that expanding Medicaid was a major bipartisan win for Arizona. Instead, Andy Biggs and Karrin Taylor Robson are ignoring Arizona families, hospitals, and business leaders by calling for drastic cuts to Medicaid. They should explain why they are cheering on this devastating plan and putting their own partisan and unpopular politics first.”
