After Convention Confrontation, NH GOP Begs Chuck Morse and Kelly Ayotte to Stop Fighting

Unnamed GOP Legislator: “our candidates are attacking each other while the Democrats are doing press conferences together”

New Hampshire Republicans are pleading with their gubernatorial candidates to tone down their attacks, according to a new report from NHJournal.

The call for peace comes after state Senator Chuck Morse tore into former U.S. Senator  Kelly Ayotte at the state GOP’s biennial gathering last weekend over her record on immigration in the U.S. Senate, prompting New Hampshire Republican Party Chairman Chris Ager to get up on stage and (unsuccessfully) urge the candidates to remain positive.

Asked about the episode, his campaign manager defended the attacks, saying that the “Ayotte campaign had already begun taking shots at them, and Morse didn’t say anything out of line in a competitive primary,” before asking, “If [Ayotte] can’t take a 100 percent fact-based argument about her abysmal record in Washington, then how is she going to hold up against the tactics of New Hampshire’s Democrat Party?”

As one anonymous Republican legislator noted, the “candidates are attacking each other while the Democrats are doing press conferences together.”

“As New Hampshire Republicans plead for peace, their gubernatorial primary is only getting uglier by the day,” said DGA Deputy Communications Director Izzi Levy “As Democrats stay focused on running the strongest possible race to take back the corner office in November, Kelly Ayotte and Chuck Morse are ramping up their attacks and staking out increasingly extreme territory, and appear to be dead-set on making sure whoever wins their party’s nomination will emerge deeply damaged by this nasty and divisive feud.”
