$64 Million Dollar Mess: Georgia Republican Primary Descends Deeper Into Expensive Chaos

$64 Million Dollar Mess: Georgia Republican Primary Descends Deeper Into Expensive Chaos

This week, the ante on Georgia Republicans nasty infighting was upped with the dramatic entrance of billionaire Rick Jackson. In addition to pledging to spend $50 million to disrupt the race and booking more than $3 million in TV ads for this week alone, Jackson came out of the gate swinging at “career politicians” Burt Jones, Brad Raffensperger, and Chris Carr while touting his own MAGA bona fides.

Jackson also spent the first few days of his campaign brutally attacking Burt Jones, calling him out as “a so-called front runner who is weak as can be and lazy as the day is long,” and swiping at him as someone who “wants the title of governor, but not the job.”

It’s just the latest example of Georgia Republicans’ messy race to the right. A mysterious dark money group has already spent nearly $14 million attacking Trump-endorsed Jones over his record of self-enrichment in office, while Jones tried to outMAGA his opponents by announcing his full support for Trump’s FBI raid, attacking Raffensperger by saying he “hasn’t fixed the corruption,” and adding that Carr “hasn’t prosecuted it.”

While Jones might have Trump’s endorsement, all the candidates in the race have backed Trump’s failed economic agenda – which has led Georgia to lead the nation in job layoffs this month and is dramatically raising costs for businesses.

“As Georgia Republicans spend millions of dollars going after each other and fighting to be the most MAGA of them all, the chaos is only making it clearer that all of the candidates would bring dysfunction to the governor’s mansion at the expense of hardworking Georgia families,” said DGA spokesperson Kevin Donohoe. “The nastiness of this primary will leave whoever emerges as the nominee deeply bruised, and Georgians will be ready to reject their extreme and expensive agenda in November.”
