DGA Announces Raising Nearly $34 Million in Q1 and Q2 of 2023

DGA Nearly Doubles Fundraising Expectations as Grassroots and Major Donors Increasingly Recognize the Importance of Electing Democratic Governors 

The Democratic Governors Association raised nearly $34 million in Q1 and Q2 of 2023 across all entities — once again shattering fundraising expectations. That amount is nearly double what the DGA raised at this same point in 2019, the last comparable year. The record-breaking haul includes:

  • $3.5 million raised online — a 481% increase from this time in 2019 — with an average gift of less than $16;
  • Contributions from nearly 70,000 supporters, more than 16,000 of whom were first time donors to the DGA; and
  • Nearly a third from major donors, representing a 384% growth from 2019, and more than 20% of whom were new to the DGA.

This continues the DGA’s momentum and growing fundraising after spending over $170 million directly on campaigns in 2022, where the DGA flipped three seats and overall netted two governor’s seats — the best midterm performance for governors from the president’s party since 1986.

This comes as both grassroots and major donors in the Democratic party have increasingly recognized the importance of electing Democratic governors as a crucial firewall for protecting fundamental freedoms and the foundation of our democracy, along with getting real results on the biggest issues impacting working families.

DGA Chair Gov. Phil Murphy stated: “The DGA’s fundraising continues to surge because we have the record of winning tough races and electing Democratic governors who are delivering on the biggest issues to back it up. With ongoing attacks on fundamental freedoms and efforts to divide us and undermine economic progress, it has never been more important to elect Democratic governors across the country. This major fundraising will also help ensure the DGA can keep our foot on the gas in both 2023 and 2024.”
