VIDEO: Dem Govs Shine at CAP Ideas Conference

On Tuesday, Democratic governors gathered with other party leaders at the Center for American Progress Ideas Conference. Montana Gov. Steve Bullock of Montana, Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe and North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper each emphasized the key role governors play in driving a policy agenda forward.

Watch the highlights here:

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe delivered a speech calling on Democrats to focus on the 2017-18 gubernatorial cycle for the impact it will have on redistricting efforts in 2021:

“You can have the greatest ideas in the world, but if you can’t win elections and get in office to implement what you want to do, then the ideas are worthless. That’s why we have to be tactically smart on the ground. We have to go forward on the issues of redistricting. We’ve got to win a lot of these governor’s races coming up. And that’s the most important thing I will tell you that we can do folks.”

Montana Gov. Steve Bullock credited Montana’s recently expanded Medicaid program for improving health care in rural communities across the state and insuring 77,000 more Montanans.

From The Daily Beast report:

He said Montana is the only state since 2014 to get Medicaid expansion through a Republican state legislature. It’s been a lifeline to rural hospitals, Bullock said, and 77,000 Montanans have health insurance who didn’t have it before. ‘It’s profound to have people stop you on the sidewalk and say you saved their life,’ he said. ‘You’ve got to show up in places that might be difficult to win.’”

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper “spoke with conviction” about his work to improve public education opportunities in North Carolina and fight to protect and expand voting rights.

“What I want to do is to make it easier for people to register and vote, not harder. We want everybody to participate in the process,” said Cooper.
