Throwback Thursday (Video): Rauner Used to Voice Support for Dream Act – Now is Silent
Does Governor Rauner Still Support the Policies of Candidate Rauner?
Yesterday, Governor Bruce Rauner offered a weak response to President Donald Trump’s decision to end DACA without a replacement. Trump’s move leaves over 40,000 Dreamers in Illinois in limbo. At a press conference, Rauner rejected the idea of a state law giving Dreamers access to local services and disagreed with Illinois AG Lisa Madigan’s decision to sue the Trump administration.
Rauner was not always this shy about his immigration positions. Just two years ago, and before President Trump, candidate Bruce Rauner took much stronger positions on Dreamers and comprehensive immigration reform in October 2014:
“Rauner – I am very pro-immigration. For example, I support the DREAM Act. For example, I support comprehensive immigration reform that includes a pathway to citizenship.
Q – How?
Rauner – So, this issue is being debated in Congress right now. There are a lot of issues that need to be worked out. As Governor, what I will push for is a comprehensive solution. I don’t have all the answers but I want a comprehensive…
Q – What are some of them?
Rauner – For folks that are here and hard-working, honest folks, we need a way for them to gradually become citizens, and become full parts of the American economy. We need to do that, there’s a lot of different ways.”
Does Governor Rauner agree with candidate Rauner?
“Once again, Bruce Rauner’s refusal to forcefully stand up to President Trump’s policies is only hurting Illinoisans,” said DGA Illinois Communications Director Sam Salustro. “Young Illinois immigrants need the support of the Governor, but Rauner seems to be reneging on his past promises. This is just another example of Bruce Rauner’s failed leadership that puts political considerations ahead of 40,000 young Illinoisans and their communities.”
