Nevada Republican Mark Amodei Votes Against Bipartisan Bill To Protect Women From Abuse

Yesterday, Nevada Rep. Mark Amodei voted against the bipartisan Violence Against Women Act, siding once again with his party over Nevadans.

Not killing women should not be a partisan issue, but for out-of-touch Republicans like Amodei, even a public health crisis and a bill protecting women from abuse is a partisan political fight. Amodei, who represents a state ranked 4th in women being murdered by men, is rushing to align himself with the extremist wing in his party as he considers a gubernatorial run in 2022. Amodei has shown exactly what type of campaign he plans to run – one as far right and partisan as he can go.

In an interview recently, Amodei rushed to defend the behavior of twice-impeached former President Donald Trump and conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene, who suggested the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting that killed 58 people was staged. Amodei also added that he believes Trump didn’t incite the riot on January 6th, despite evidence showing the mob was overwhelmingly made up of Trump supporters, donors, and even some GOP party officials.

Gov. Steve Sisolak, meanwhile, has been a  vocal supporter of the VAWA and stronger protections for victims of domestic abuse. In 2019, the governor issued a proclamation recognizing the 25th anniversary of the VAWA and signed multiple pieces of legislation putting tougher domestic violence laws on the books.

“There is no good reason why Mark Amodei just voted against a bipartisan bill to protect women,” said DGA Communications Senior Advisor Christina Amestoy. “Abuse against women is not a political issue – it’s just an issue, period. But Amodei won’t miss any opportunity to cozy up to Trump’s base, even if it means leaving Nevada’s women vulnerable to violence.”
