Dem Govs Stand Up for DACA

Latest News

As the Trump administration announced its plans to end DACA yesterday, Democratic governors from around the country spoke out in defense of the thousands of Dreamers living in and contributing to their states:
Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy, DGA Chair:
“From elementary and secondary education, to post-secondary education, to supports for vibrant, safe communities – we have invested so much into undocumented children who have grown up in America. Denying these youths with access to work opportunities and affordable higher education goes against the very core of who we are. The fact is, pushing these young, gifted individuals into the shadows not only diminishes their chance for a bright future, but it darkens ours, too.”
Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, DGA Vice Chair:
The ‘build a wall’ and ‘deport them all’ mentality in the White House is an affront to the principles this nation was founded on and an irresponsible response to our outdated immigration system. Congress must seize this urgent challenge and stand up for Dreamers, now.
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, DGA Policy Chair:
“New York’s example is the exact opposite. We believe in diversity. We believe in welcoming people from all over the globe because we’re not one religion, we’re not one race – we’re one idea. If you come here and you work with us, you join the family of New York. E pluribus unum, out of many, one.”
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown:
“Here in Oregon, Dreamers are an integral part of our workforce and contribute over $6 million to our state’s economy. Dreamers embody the ideals of the American Dream, and for so many, the United States is the only home they know. I am deeply troubled by federal orders that seek to tear apart otherwise law-abiding families and undermine Oregon’s economy.”
North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper:
“We shouldn’t be hurting productive members of our communities who were brought here as innocent children. Congress needs to pass common sense immigration reform that will protect our borders, keep families together, and let these young people remain in the only place they’ve ever known as home.”
Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo:
“Thanks to DACA, 1,200 young people have come forward, passed background checks, and now live and work legally in Rhode Island. For many of these Dreamers, the United States is the only home they’ve ever known. President Trump’s plan to end DACA is nothing short of cruel, and could mean a $51.1 million hit to Rhode Island’s economy. As long as I am the Governor of this state, Rhode Island will stand up for the American dream, and the Dreamers who keep it alive.”
Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper:
“Colorado has always been a place where people can determine their destiny. The DACA program provides thousands of young people the opportunity to do just that. President Trump’s decision to end the DACA program unnecessarily jeopardizes the futures of more than 17,000 Coloradans.”
Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe:
“President Trump’s decision to rescind DACA is a heartless attack on 800,000 young people who were brought here by their parents at a young age. It will plunge families, communities, businesses, and schools into terrible uncertainty for no reason other than to keep a political promise to extremists on the far right-wing of his party. DREAMers are our friends, neighbors, co-workers, students, fellow taxpayers and the people who serve in the military to protect us. An attack on them is an attack on the fabric of our nation.”
Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton:
“Here in Minnesota we have a shortage of skilled workers. So we’re going to take some 6,200 that are here under DACA and send them away? It’s lunacy.”
Hawaii Gov. David Ige:
“I won’t sit still as 600 HI Dreamers are uprooted. @atghigov and I will pursue all legal options to stop @realDonaldTrump from ending #DACA.”
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf:
“Ending #DACA would be short-sighted, misguided, and against Pennsylvania’s values. Why would we punish these kids?”
