Lou Leon Guerrero

Gov. Lou Leon Guerrero was inaugurated on January 7, 2019, as the 9th governor of Guam. At an early age, she learned the importance of hard work and giving back to one’s community. As governor, she has applied these values and is dedicated to improving the lives of Guam’s families.

Gov. Leon Guerrero received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from California State University, later obtaining a master’s degree in public health from UCLA. Her career in the public health industry ranged from working as a staff nurse in hospitals in Guam and California to management positions at the Guam Memorial Hospital. Her experience in the field has made her a tireless advocate for health care, and she continues to hold her license as a registered nurse.

Gov. Leon Guerrero has served as the president and CEO of the Bank of Guam, doubling its assets during her tenure. Gov. Leon Guerrero has served on the board of many civil society organizations, such as the Guam Women’s Chamber of Commerce and has received numerous awards for her work in both the business and the healthcare industry. Prior to serving as governor, she was elected to the Guam Legislature, serving as its Majority Leader. Gov. Leon Guerrero helped pass laws improving health care and banning smoking in restaurants and bars.

As governor, Gov. Leon Guerrero signed a law increasing the minimum wage in Guam and extending a popular apprenticeship program, creating jobs and raising wages for approximately 3,500 Guamanians. She is working to establish a plebiscite to allow Guamanians voices to be heard on Guam’s future political status.

Gov. Leon Guerrero and her husband Jeff Cook have two children and seven grandchildren.
