NC Republicans Hit A New Low With Today’s Surprise Vote On 9/11

Latest News

Today, North Carolina Republicans hit a new low. After refusing to come to the table with a counteroffer to Gov. Roy Cooper’s budget, state House Republicans called a surprise vote on the morning of 9/11 to override Gov. Cooper’s budget veto.
Knowing they didn’t have the votes if Democratic members were present, House Republicans deliberately chose to hold their vote when barely half of the body’s members were in the capitol.
House and state Senate Republicans refused to come to the table to negotiate in good faith on a budget with Gov. Cooper for over two months, costing the state over a million dollars. Cooper’s budget calls for an 8.5 percent raise for teachers and expanding Medicaid, which would create 37,000 jobs and provide health care to 500,000 North Carolinians.
“North Carolina Republicans hit a disgusting new low today,” said DGA Communications Director David Turner. “Today’s surprise vote shows NC Republicans would rather cheat to deny teachers a pay raise they deserve and health care to 500,000 North Carolinians than negotiate in good faith with Gov. Cooper. Instead, Republicans chose to spend the anniversary of a national tragedy pushing their harmful partisan agenda. It’s shameful, but clearly that’s not an emotion they feel.”
