Virginia’s GOP Primary Devolves into Messy, Far-Right Contest Before it’s Even Officially Started
Less than 24 hours after Virginia’s anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ, and anti-public education Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears announced her campaign for governor, the state’s GOP primary is already gearing up to be a messy, negative race to the far-right.
At the first event of her campaign, Sears immediately and repeatedly leaned into her staunch support for Donald Trump, after facing backlash from her own party for saying she could not support him after the 2022 midterms.
Meanwhile, the state’s GOP attorney general, Jason Miyares issued a bitter statement attacking Sears for launching her campaign before the 2024 election is over, previewing the GOP infighting that is set to consume this primary.
“It’s rare to see a primary get so nasty nearly a year out – and before it’s even technically started – but Virginia Republicans are just that eager to tear each other to shreds,” said DGA National Press Secretary Devon Cruz. “With all the chaos to come, the one thing that’s clear is that the eventual GOP nominee is going to have to run to the far-right and will be out of touch with the majority of Virginia voters on top issues like abortion rights, improving public education and helping the middle class.”
