Trump Loyalists Harris and Cox Team Up in Divisive Maryland MAGA Primary
Yesterday, the Washington Post reported that GOP Rep. Andy Harris is supporting Del. Daniel Cox as he runs for Maryland governor. Their partnership is sure to shake up the increasingly crowded Republican field.
“All of this is the potential entrance of Cox onto the radar screen of the Trump world,” said Todd Eberly, a political science professor at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. “That is what boosts his campaign. And it presents the possibility of the Republican Party in Maryland with having a primary between the Hogan wing and Trump wing of the party, and that would be an incredibly divisive primary.”
Praise from a pro-Trump extremist like Harris confirms that Cox is preparing to unleash chaos on Maryland’s MAGA primary, which could spell trouble for Silent Kelly Schulz, who has dodged questions about the disgraced former president.
Harris called Cox “a person who reminds me of myself,” which is unsurprising considering their shared ties to Donald Trump’s ‘Big Lie.’ Harris voted against a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6th insurrection, and Cox personally organized buses to the Trump rally and called Mike Pence a “traitor” for not overturning the election results.
“As Silent Kelly Schulz continues to hide, it’s no surprise that die-hard Trump loyalists like Andy Harris and Daniel Cox are teaming up to drag this primary even further to the far-right,” said DGA Deputy Communications Director Sam Newton. “At a time when Marylanders want leaders to focus on rebuilding the economy and lifting up working families, this help ensures that Maryland Republicans are set for a bruising and divisive primary about unpopular far-right Republican litmus tests.”
