To Winsome Sears, Virginians Losing Their Jobs Isn’t a “Real Issue”
In a disastrous interview last week on CNN, Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears admitted she doesn’t think Virginians losing their jobs because of Donald Trump’s DOGE cuts is a “real issue.” This is just the latest in a long string of comments Sears has made in defense of Trump’s attacks on Virginia’s workforce and mocking those who have lost their jobs, proving that she will always put her own partisan agenda ahead of what’s right for Virginia.
DGA External Affairs Director Ofirah Yheskel joined MSNBC’s The Weekend to respond to Sears and outline how Trump’s job-killing agenda is impacting the Virginia governor’s race.
Yheskel told MSNBC: “Job losses are already hitting the Commonwealth in such a hard way. It’s creating a liability for the Republican nominee Winsome Sears, who’s saying she doesn’t see what the issue is, what’s the big deal, she wants to talk about ‘real stuff.’ I think it’s really real when people are losing their jobs.”
Sears has downplayed the impacts of Trump and Musk’s attacks on Virginia’s workers and economy, telling Virginians who are concerned about losing their jobs they should “not fret.” Sears also mocked Virginians who lost their jobs, saying that “the media is making it out to be this huge, huge thing. And I don’t understand why.”
Here’s what Virginians are reading about Sears’ record of dismissing and defending attacks on Virginia’s economy:
- Washington Post: “Abigail Spanberger, the Democratic nominee for governor in Virginia, is going on the offense in her race against Republican nominee Winsome Earle-Sears. The former congresswoman’s campaign will begin airing a pointed digital ad in Northern Virginia starting today, campaign officials tell us exclusively, highlighting Earle-Sears’s combative interview with CNN’s Manu Raju on Friday, in which the Republican dismissed questions about cuts to the federal workforce that have disproportionately impacted Virginia by saying she wanted ‘to talk about real issues.’”
- Virginia Scope: “Democratic gubernatorial nominee Abigail Spanberger released a new ad attacking her Republican opponent, Winsome Earle-Sears, over her Friday interview on CNN. Earle-Sears had a tense exchange during the interview, saying she would stop participating if the host pressed her on proposed federal workforce cuts in Virginia.”
- Dogwood: Earle-Sears refuses to say if Trump’s federal job cuts are bad for Virginia
- The Hill: “‘Do you support the president’s purge of the federal workforce, yes or no?’ Raju asked the lieutenant governor. ‘Oh, OK. If this is the way you want to go, then go ahead. I’m just not going to participate, because I want to talk about real issues,’ Earle-Sears responded …”
