#TBT: Seven Years Later, Craven Kelly Still Trying to Have it Both Ways With Trump

In an interview with WFEA, Kelly Ayotte claimed she’s “not getting involved in the presidential race,” dodged questions about who she plans to support in her state’s crucial Republican primary, and refused to mention former president Donald Trump by name.

Ayotte’s problems with Trump are nothing new. In 2016, when running for the U.S. Senate, she rescinded her endorsement of the former president and didn’t vote for him, instead writing in Mike Pence. Ever since her high-profile un-endorsement “cost her in her failed run for re-election to the U.S. Senate,” Ayotte has been trying to do damage control and rewrite her “torturous history” with the former president — to no avail.

Shortly after launching her campaign for governor, Ayotte claimed that she would support the Republican nominee no matter what, even if it is Trump again. But it hasn’t been enough for the state’s MAGA base, with former congressional candidate Bob Burns warning that Ayotte “will have a lot of trouble appealing to Trump supporters.”

“Seven years after losing her Senate seat, Kelly Ayotte is still playing the same losing game when it comes to Donald Trump,” said DGA States Press Secretary Emma O’Brien. “With Trump’s ongoing threats to health care, democracy, and reproductive rights, Ayotte has already shown she can’t be trusted to do anything but look out for her own politics.”
