Rowdy Republican Primary Kicks Off With Aric Nesbitt Launching Campaign in Michigan Governor’s Race
Michigan State Senator Aric Nesbitt launched his campaign for governor on Tuesday, signaling what is sure to be a messy, crowded, and expensive Republican primary to the far-right.
Nesbitt laid out a harmful agenda that focuses more on divisive culture wars than on addressing the issues that Michiganders care about most, like lowering costs, fully funding public schools, and growing the state’s economy.
This is no surprise, as Nesbitt has consistently supported harmful plans that make life worse for Michigan families. In the state legislature, he has recently voted against repealing the retirement tax, which provides an average tax cut of $1,000 to 500,000 Michigan households, voted for an unpopular scheme that threatened necessary funds for public schools, and even voted to keep in place the state’s now-defunct abortion ban from 1931, in addition to several other anti-abortion policies.
“With Aric Nesbitt, Michigan’s Republican primary is off to a rowdy start, and we only expect the field to grow larger and more extreme. Nesbitt has spent his career in the state Senate voting against common sense, popular policies that make Michiganders lives better and protect freedoms in the name of his own harmful partisan agenda,” said DGA Communications Director Sam Newton.“Governor Gretchen Whitmer has delivered real results for working families – fixing the roads, cutting taxes for the middle class and seniors, fully funding public education, and protecting reproductive rights – by always putting Michigan first, and that’s the same kind of strong, successful Democratic leader Michiganders will want to keep moving forward with in 2026.”
